We will continue to seek ways to give back to the communities we belong to, promote safe workplaces for the people who make our products, reduce our impact on the environment, and strive to provide our employees with a great place to work.
All of us have a role to play in building and shaping a positive, inclusive, and sustainable future. GAZMAN has been trading for over 50 years and as our sustainability journey continues, we will actively seek ways to leave the world we live in, better than we found it.
Sustainability Pillars And Approach
Through a series of workshops, we explored three pillars of sustainability to inform our approach. These were focused on our environmental impact, our social impact, and our approach to corporate governance.
Textile Waste
We approached this work in two key ways. The first was partnering with Textile Recyclers Australia (TRA) to introduce pre-consumer textile recycling bins at our Support Office and with our local manufacturing partners.
This means our offcuts and production waste are now diverted away from landfill and placed into a renewable textile recycling stream.
We also ensure that any store items unable to be donated are sent directly to TRA. These are transported through our logistics partner, Border Express, who support the initiative by contributing to freight costs.
The second focus area was reassessing how we manage products that can no longer be sold in our stores, whether due to light damage, shop soiling or simply being older stock.
To give these garments another chance to be worn, we partnered with Salvos Stores. Wearable items are sent from our stores network to the Salvos warehouse, where they are sorted and prepared for sale across their retail stores nationwide.
In The Past Year
Our partnership with Salvos has resulted in more than 236 kilos of garments being given a second life, and TRA has helped us divert 228 kilos of textiles from landfill since the program began in November 2024.
Support Office Recycling Project
Our Support Office recycling program was created to help us better understand what we were throwing away, what could be recycled, and how each stream was managed.
To begin, we met with our waste collection partners to get a clear picture of our current habits and identify the small changes that would deliver the most impact.
With this insight, we introduced a number of new recycling practices across the office.
These included:
- Collecting and recycling aluminium coffee pods. The aluminium is recovered and reused, while the coffee grounds are diverted to compost.
- Removing individual desk bins and improving centralised bin stations.
- Updating bin signage and adding dedicated cardboard recycling to reduce contamination in co-mingled waste.
- Launching an office-wide recycling program, focusing on team education and building better purchasing and recycling habits.
Since the rollout, our recycling rate has increased from 53% in October 2024 to 80.1% in January 2025.
Team response has been strong, and the program has sparked broader interest across the business in strengthening our sustainability efforts.
